Norway's King Harald V Hospitalised and Put on Sick Leave, Palace Says
The palace said cortisone treatment for haemolytic anaemia caused fluid retention, and the 89-year-old monarch will be on sick leave for two weeks.
89-Year-Old King Harald was admitted to the National Hospital in Oslo following a medical examination, the Royal House of Norway announced. He will take two weeks of sick leave, during which Crown Prince Haakon will serve as regent.
The Royal Palace stated Harald is suffering from hemolytic anemia, a blood disorder. Recent cortisone treatment for this condition led to fluid retention, requiring hospital care.
Harald, Europe's oldest reigning monarch, has faced multiple health challenges in recent years, including receiving a pacemaker. He was previously hospitalized earlier this year in Tenerife for infection and dehydration.
Queen Sonja was briefly hospitalized for heart problems in May, and Crown Princess Mette-Marit underwent a lung transplant in July following a chronic lung disease. The Norwegian royal family faces a difficult health period.
Beyond health crises, Mette-Marit has contended with her son Marius Borg Hoiby's imprisonment after he was sentenced in June to four years in prison. Documents also revealed her past correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein.
Norway's royal house reports a hospital stay of King Harald V. For the coming days Kronprinz Haakon will be the focus. This is the case with the monarch.
