Dunston Crash Police Officer Guilty of Woman's Death

On Wednesday at Teesside Crown Court, PC Mark Roberts was found guilty of causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.
Responding to a Grade 1 emergency, PC Mark Roberts drove a marked police car with blue lights and sirens on Dunston Road, Gateshead, near the Metrocentre on July 8, 2022.
Videos played to jurors revealed Roberts drove 43mph on a 30mph road before slowing to about 25mph at impact, with helmet camera and dash-cam footage shown.
Judge Francis Laird KC adjourned sentencing until Tuesday, April 7 for a pre-sentence report and granted Roberts bail; he remains suspended from Northumbria Police and has an interim driving ban.
Prosecutors told jurors that Northumbria Police officer Roberts' driving was 'far below the standard expected' and showed 'wholesale disregard', while defence counsel called any lapse 'momentary'.
