North Carolina Reports First Flu-Related Death of 2026-27 Season
Health officials said 335 people died from flu last season, including 10 children, as they urged annual shots for everyone 6 months and older.
On Thursday, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported the state's first flu death of the 2026-2027 season, involving an adult from the central region who died during the first week of October.
Last year's respiratory virus season saw 335 flu-related deaths across North Carolina, including 10 children, marking the third-highest total since broad state reporting began in 2009.
"This is a heartbreaking reminder of how serious the flu can be," said North Carolina Health and Human Services Secretary Dev Sangvai, urging residents to get vaccinated.
Residents can obtain flu, COVID-19, and RSV vaccinations at pharmacies and medical offices, while officials recommend staying home when sick and washing hands frequently to limit transmission.
State health officials will include this recent death in next week's North Carolina Respiratory Virus Summary Dashboard update, which tracks seasonal trends to help residents monitor respiratory illnesses.
