NJ Transit Riders Face 5-Week Schedule Change for Portal North Bridge Cutover
Amtrak will cut Acela and Northeast Regional trips as NJ Transit diverts many weekday trains to Hoboken during Portal North Bridge work.
Starting Saturday, Oct. 10, Amtrak and NJ Transit began a five-week service reduction between Philadelphia and New York City to complete the $2.3 billion Portal North Bridge project.
The 116-year-old Portal Bridge, which opened in 1910, frequently caused delays; commuter Thomas noted the bridge often left passengers sitting for 30 minutes, necessitating its retirement.
NJ Transit reduced weekday trains from 133 to 113, while Amtrak cut Amtrak Acela service to 18 and Northeast Regional to 40 trains; Keystone service between Philadelphia and New York City dropped from 24 to 10 weekday trains.
Commuters on the Morris and Essex, Gladstone Branch, and Montclair-Boonton lines face diversions to Hoboken; one traveler said, "I'll probably end up just going into the city less, because it's like more of an effort."
Regular schedules are expected to resume Sunday, Nov. 15, and Governor Mikie Sherrill stated, "This will all be over November 15th to provide you that better commute.
