'We'll Stand up for Britain': Nigel Farage Vows Biggest Royal Navy Channel Operation Since WWII Amid French Backlash
Reform says 10 Navy vessels would intercept dinghies and a Bay Class ship could hold up to 700 people at sea.
- Nigel Farage, leader of Reform, pledged the "biggest Royal Navy Channel operation since World War II," vowing to deploy warships to intercept migrant boats and return them to France or Belgium without Paris's permission.
- Under the 28-page policy, ten Royal Navy vessels would deploy military-crewed inflatable boats to "come alongside" migrant dinghies. A Bay Class landing ship would provide "detention capacity at sea" for up to 700 people.
- France's interior ministry warned the operation "would constitute a violation of French sovereignty" and international law. Maritime lawyer James Turner stated UNCLOS does not permit countries to return asylum seekers to their departure point.
- Labour officials labeled the scheme "gimmicky," accusing Reform of reheating Conservative policies to distract from financial scandals. A spokesperson noted 46,000 attempted crossings have been stopped, while more than 2,000 migrants arrived since Prime Minister Andy Burnham took office.
- Home Office figures show crossings this year have fallen by about 43 per cent compared with 2025. Reform maintains it is on firm legal ground, citing the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and its duty to render assistance at sea.
