BBC's Nicky Campbell tells court teacher who attacked him 'completely lost it'
The broadcaster described a violent assault and said the accused former teachers were medically unfit to stand trial, leaving a sheriff to decide on conviction grounds.
Broadcaster Nicky Campbell testified at Edinburgh Sheriff Court this week, alleging his former Edinburgh Academy maths teacher Colin Turner violently attacked him in the courtyard during the 1970s.
At age 15, Campbell was "yanked from behind" by Turner beside a noticeboard when running late for class, after which Turner "completely lost it" and attacked him in a "complete frenzy."
Describing the assault, Campbell said he was "rag dolled" by the teacher and experienced "more than 10" seconds of terror while Turner pushed him to the floor with his foot.
After the incident, Campbell told Turner, "I could call the police on you for that," then went home with a torn shirt, distraught enough that his mother called the school.
Turner and David Bourne, both former teachers, were deemed medically unfit to stand trial; Campbell claimed reporting the incident in the 1970s would have been the "nuclear" option, and his pupil file was "ridiculously scant.
