Royal Ulster Winter Fair Cattle Classes Cancelled over Bluetongue Disease
Cattle classes at the Royal Ulster Winter Fair are cancelled to prevent bluetongue spread after two herd cases and new control zones were established, RUAS said.
- On Monday, the Royal Ulster Agricultural Society cancelled cattle classes at this year’s Royal Ulster Winter Fair due to bluetongue, which is set for Thursday at the Eikon Exhibition Centre near Lisburn.
- A suspected case in Greyabbey emerged after bluetongue was confirmed in a herd close to Bangor, and a second 20 kilometre temporary control zone was introduced on Saturday.
- Bluetongue affects cattle, sheep, goats, deer and llamas and is transmitted mainly by midges, which are most active from April to November.
- RUAS said protecting the province's top dairy stock is its priority and expressed regret at no cattle being present, while the Eikon and Logan Halls will be full with trade stands this Thursday.
- Daera described the move as understandable and said it shows how seriously the agri-food sector is treating the arrival of BTV-3 Bluetongue virus, adding veterinary investigations continue with agri-food stakeholders.
