NHTSA Investigates Rivian Over 2 Reports of Cars Swerving
The preliminary evaluation covers about 115,000 R1 pickups and SUVs after two complaints described loss of control and one collision, NHTSA said.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a Preliminary Evaluation on Thursday into Rivian Automotive Inc. regarding rear toe link failures, covering about 115,000 of the company's R1S and R1T vehicles.
Following reports of vehicles that "swerve across multiple lanes of traffic," including a collision, regulators initiated the investigation; issues with the same suspension part previously led Rivian to recall nearly 20,000 vehicles earlier this year.
Rivian said it is cooperating with the probe, though the company's internal investigation suggests the incidents do not implicate the toe link component; both vehicles were previously serviced, with one handled by a third-party repair facility.
The ODI will now assess the part's durability and Rivian's repair protocols, specifically examining the component's "sensitivity to service procedures" to compare the failures and evaluate other 2023-2024 model year R1S and R1T vehicles.
This regulatory scrutiny arrives as Rivian prepares to deliver its anticipated new SUV on June 9, while the company plans over 50 new service centers by 2027, expanding to more than 150 total locations.
