Newcastle takes advantage in Champions League race by beating Chelsea 2
Newcastle United defeated Chelsea 2-0 on Sunday at St James' Park in a Premier League match with two rounds remaining.
The victory followed Chelsea striker Nicolas Jackson's sending off in the 35th minute after a VAR review of a foul on Sven Botman.
Sandro Tonali scored early in the second minute and Bruno Guimaraes sealed the win with a 90th-minute goal as Chelsea pushed for an equalizer.
Newcastle moved one point above Manchester City, who drew 0-0 with last-placed Southampton, lifting Newcastle to third in the standings.
The result strengthens Newcastle’s position in the Champions League qualification battle, affecting the tight race among six teams for European spots next season.
With a goal at the beginning (2') and at the end (90+1'), Newcastle "hurt" ten-man Chelsea (2-0) from the 36th minute in the derby of the five-a-side team and is one breath away from exiting the Champions League.
