New Statutory Sick Pay Rights Start - What Has Changed and What It Means for You
The phased rollout removes a minimum earnings threshold for sick pay and gives workers day-one access to paternity and unpaid parental leave.
As of this week, the Employment Rights Act 2025 introduces significant changes to UK labor laws, including immediate updates to Statutory Sick Pay and family leave policies aimed at supporting workers.
The removal of the three-day waiting period and earnings threshold means Statutory Sick Pay is now available from the first day of illness for more eligible employees.
Payments are calculated at 80% of average weekly earnings, capped at £123.25 per week, while new day-one family leave entitlements allow employees to access paternity and unpaid parental leave immediately upon hiring.
Minister for Employment Dame Diana Johnson said the changes support employees to recover, while Acas chief executive Niall Mackenzie noted the act represents a "major shake-up in employment law" impacting businesses and workers.
Further reforms will continue throughout 2026 and 2027, including new trade union legislation and protections against harassment, with changes to unfair dismissal protections set to be introduced on January 1, 2027.
