New statute in Richmond’s West End commemorating racial integration of Westhampton Junior High School

Strides was commissioned by Bon Secours and Thalhimer Realty Partners to pay tribute to the story of racial integration in the City of Richmond. The sculpture was designed by local artists Matt Lively and Tim Harper. Jane Cooper Johnson, formerly known as Daisy Jane Cooper, was the first African American student at Westhampton Junior High in 1961.
