On 30 August, uniform rules to protect the welfare of dogs and cats will come into force in the EU. They regulate breeding, housing, sale, letting, import and traceability. The new rules will ban practices harmful to animals, such as tail docking and ear docking, and will also tighten measures against the illegal trade in dogs and cats. The rules will be introduced gradually.
