New poll: Hispanic and rural voters conflicted over Texas' direction
The poll shows 59% of rural voters back Abbott’s direction, while 58% of Hispanic voters say Texas is on the wrong track.
A new poll from the Hobby School of Public Affairs at the University of Houston reveals rural and Hispanic voters remain deeply divided on the direction of Texas and the U.S., with 62% of Hispanic voters saying the nation is heading in the wrong direction.
Historically, Republicans have secured the rural vote while Democrats have carried the Hispanic vote, though recent election cycles show Hispanic voters shifting right and flipping several border counties red.
The Hobby poll reports 67% of rural voters view President Donald Trump favorably compared to 43% of Hispanic voters; 59% of rural voters believe Texas is heading in the right direction under Gov. Greg Abbott.
Republicans currently lead by slim margins in statewide races, though Democrat Gina Hinojosa remains competitive, leading Abbott by 10 points among Hispanic voters.
Early voting continues through Oct. 30, with voters across the board identifying the economy as their top concern ahead of the Nov. 3 election.
