Non-Surgical Procedure May Help Relieve Knee Pain
The minimally invasive procedure cut pain scores from 7 to 3, and 80% of participants met a clinically important improvement at 12 months.
- New research from Germany shows that genicular artery embolization provides "significant, lasting pain relief" for patients with osteoarthritis-related knee pain, according to a study published today in Radiology.
- Study leader Florian Fleckenstein explained that for many patients with knee osteoarthritis, "there is a real treatment gap today" between ineffective injections and joint replacement surgery.
- The study included 114 women and 80 men who underwent 239 GAE procedures; pain scores fell from seven out of 10 at baseline to three at 12-month follow-ups.
- All procedures were technically successful with no moderate or severe adverse events, and Fleckenstein noted GAE offers "a meaningful new option between injections and joint replacement" for suitable patients.
- Knee osteoarthritis affects more than 365 million adults worldwide according to the World Health Organization, positioning GAE as a potential option to slow disease progression in this massive patient population.

New procedure delivers lasting knee arthritis pain relief without surgery
A minimally invasive treatment that blocks inflammation-driving blood vessels in the knee provided significant pain relief and improved function for osteoarthritis patients, with benefits lasting at least a year. The procedure was safe, highly successful, and could offer a new alternative for people seeking relief before considering knee replacement.
Novel embolization technique reduces pain from knee osteoarthritis
Embolization of abnormal blood vessels using rapidly resorbable gelatin-based microspheres is safe and provides significant, lasting pain relief and functional improvement for patients with osteoarthritis-related knee pain, according to a new study published today in Radiology, a journal of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA).
