M1 Extension From Blackhill to Raymond Terrace Complete
The 15-kilometre link is expected to cut peak travel times by 7 to 9 minutes and remove up to 25,000 vehicles a day, Transport for NSW said.
- On Thursday, September 10, the new 15km M1 Pacific Motorway extension between Black Hill and Raymond Terrace opened its northbound lanes, with southbound lanes expected to open Friday.
- Jointly funded by the federal government and the NSW Government for $2.24 billion, the project eliminates the notorious Hexham-Heatherbrae bottleneck and completes the Sydney-to-Brisbane motorway corridor.
- More than 2700 workers spent over four million hours building the motorway, moving more than 1.6 million cubic metres of earth while diverting 96 per cent of construction waste from landfill.
- The extension is expected to cut peak travel times by seven to nine minutes and remove up to 25,000 vehicles daily from local streets, improving freight connections to the Port of Newcastle and Newcastle Airport.
- NSW Minister for Roads Jenny Aitchison stated nearly 950,000 people are expected to call the Hunter home by 2041, and the extension reflects a region working harder and building faster than ever.
