New Home Sales in Ontario Surge in Second Quarter, Industry Says
Single-family sales climbed 7,215 after the tax break took effect, while 1,195 new condo sales lagged, the report said.
- On Tuesday, the Building Industry and Land Development Association and Ontario Home Builders' Association reported that new home sales in Ontario jumped 130 per cent year-over-year in the second quarter.
- Introduced on April 1, the program removes the 13 per cent HST for eligible new homes valued up to $1 million, providing a maximum rebate of $130,000.
- Peter Norman, a commercial real estate expert, calculated that second-quarter sales preserved 17,300 construction and homebuilding jobs, with 7,215 single-family home sales in the first three months.
- Toronto broker David Fleming urged caution, saying, "We have to take it with a grain of salt because, of course, BILD is going to say that sales are happening."
- Sarah Chapin, spokesperson for Ontario Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy, stated the government remains committed to affordability, though the rebate program expires on March 31, 2027.
