New federal law puts an end to the hemp industry, Oregon businesses say
The law narrows hemp sales and leaves one Oregon retailer planning to close as stores report empty shelves and lost pet CBD business.
- Oregon CBD Company is clearing its shelves and plans to close by the end of this month in response to a new Federal law that will ban most of its hemp-derived products by year-end.
- Sen. Mitch McConnell, a Kentucky Republican, added an amendment to a 2025 government funding bill narrowing the definition of hemp, effectively banning products with more than 0.4 milligrams of THC per container.
- Seth Crawford, co-owner of Independence-based Oregon CBD Seeds, said the law "essentially ends the hemp industry." Manager Leslie Frost noted she helps elderly Oregonians find CBD products for pain management.
- While the hemp shop closes, the adjacent Oregon Cannabis Company will remain open under the same owner, with one selling hemp items and the other selling marijuana.
- Congress pushed the effective date to December 11, though Democratic members have unsuccessfully attempted to alter the legislation; without a fix, Crawford plans to focus on selling hemp seeds to home growers.
