New Breast Cancer Survey Shows Concern not Always Leading to Screening in Women 40 and Over, According to MedStar Health
Three in four women worry about breast cancer, but 52% of women over 40 have not had a mammogram in the past year, MedStar Health found.
On Thursday, MedStar Health released a survey showing that while three in four women fear breast cancer, over half of women over 40 have not received a mammogram in the past year.
Only 18% of women prioritize their own health needs before other responsibilities, according to Dr. Candace Mainor, medical oncologist at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, who noted that work and caregiving demands consume attention.
Misconceptions persist: 33% of women believe breast cancer always presents as a lump, while 30% fear mammograms expose them to dangerous radiation, said Dr. Meghan Letts Milburn of MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center.
Despite these gaps, 94% of women correctly understand that breast cancer is survivable when caught early. "Early detection changes everything," Milburn said, noting treatment becomes more effective and less invasive.
MedStar Health provides a free Health Risk Assessment to help women bridge the gap between concern and action, offering personalized information to build confidence in scheduling mammograms.
