A Couple Who Lost More than $500K in a Scam Help Police Catch the Courier
Police said the courier had already picked up gold from 15 victims across eight states before the sting led to his arrest.
A New Berlin, Wisconsin, couple helped police catch a gold scam courier after losing $526,000 to a nationwide fraud scheme. The couple contacted authorities after recognizing the deception, enabling a successful sting operation.
The scheme typically begins with a computer pop-up ad and phone calls falsely claiming bank accounts were hacked. Victims are instructed to convert their savings into gold to protect their assets.
To bait courier Roshan Shah, police filled a box with rocks instead of gold. Shah, from India, had already collected gold from 15 victims across eight states before his arrest.
Shah pleaded guilty to a federal charge and received a four-year prison sentence, with eventual deportation to India. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Brad Schimel noted very few such cases involve main operators based in the U.S.
Americans lost more than $311.8 million to similar scams last year, according to FBI reports. FBI Milwaukee special agent in charge Alan Karr said the agency is 'looking for commonalities in scams' to dismantle centers.
