Netflix says it has used AI in over 300 titles and there’s no stopping it now
Netflix said generative AI has helped speed up post-production and cut costs, with some sequences finished twice as fast and at half the cost.
- On Thursday, Netflix revealed that roughly 300 programs used generative AI this year, concentrated in post-production for enhancing crowd scenes and battle sequences. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the technology enables "higher quality output more quickly and efficiently."
- Netflix is pursuing AI to optimize its $20 billion annual content budget, acquiring actor Ben Affleck's film tech firm InterPositive in March 2026 for up to $600 million and consolidating virtual effects under the Eyeline studio banner.
- The American Experiment documentary features 17 minutes of AI-enhanced footage that Sarandos said was "produced twice as fast and at half the cost" of traditional options, enabling shots productions otherwise could not afford.
- During the second quarter, Netflix posted revenue of $12.6 billion, up 13% year-over-year, and repurchased $4.7 billion in stock, though shares fell as much as 9% after hours amid investor concerns over decelerating growth.
- The company plans to allocate about 5% of content spending to live programming while competing with platforms like YouTube and TikTok, asserting that "time spent is just one aspect of strong engagement.
