Nearly Half of World’s Migratory Bird Species in Decline, Report Warns
BirdLife says 11% of migratory birds are threatened with extinction, while only 9% have full-cycle protection across their flyways.
- On Friday, BirdLife International released its 2026 report at the Global Flyways Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, finding that 45% of migratory bird species are in decline, with 11% threatened with extinction.
- Human activity drives most population pressures, with 58% of assessed Key Biodiversity Areas in poor condition. Habitat loss, climate change, and invasive species continue to threaten these populations.
- The East Asian-Australasian Flyway shows the highest decline rate among land-based systems at 53%, while half the species using the world's six marine flyways are also declining.
- Governments and financial institutions adopted the Nairobi Flyways Declaration to improve cross-border cooperation. Plans involving the Asian Development Bank and the World Bank aim to mobilize about $6 billion for habitat conservation.
- "Migratory birds are sentinels," said Stuart Butchart, BirdLife International's chief scientist, noting their declines reveal growing pressure on natural systems. Coordinated conservation across entire flyways could help populations recover.
