South Okanagan-Similkameen communities receiving provincially funded water metres
- On May 6, the province announced a $50 million pilot initiative to install approximately 15,000 automated water meters across 19 communities, including small, rural areas and First Nations territories, several of which are located within the South Okanagan-Similkameen region.
- The program seeks to support financially and managerially challenged small and rural areas in conserving water and enhancing the long-term sustainability of their local water systems amid growing drought threats.
- The pilot program provides funding for water meters in several South Okanagan-Similkameen communities, including multiple rural areas and First Nations territories, enabling residents to monitor water consumption and detect leaks.
- Officials project that the program could cut water consumption by as much as 30 percent, saving around 1.5 billion litres each year—an amount equivalent to the daily drinking water needs of 750 million individuals based on provincial estimates.
- The program is expected to lower costs for residents, increase drought resiliency, and generate research findings to help extend water metering benefits to other B.C. Communities.
