Nearly 12-foot alligator kills fisherman in Winter Garden
On Friday, a 71-year-old man died after a suspected alligator attack at Dr. Bradford Memorial Park in Winter Garden, according to Winter Garden Fire Chief Jose Gainza.
Direct water access to Lake Apopka makes the park a habitat for American alligators, according to the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Officials believe the man was fishing along the shoreline when the attack occurred, though rescue efforts were complicated by the presence of active alligators nearby.
Emergency crews recovered the man's body from the water around 7 p.m., and officials subsequently killed the 12-foot alligator involved in the attack.
While alligator attacks are considered rare, the FWC reports 500 bites against humans since 1948, of which 32 were deadly, according to historical data.
