IRGC Claims Second Supertanker Mine Strike in Hormuz
The IRGC said the vessel’s engine room was hit and it lost propulsion as British monitors reported the busiest week of attacks since the war began.
- On Saturday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps claimed two fully laden supertankers struck naval mines in the Strait of Hormuz within less than 24 hours, alleging the vessels used "unauthorized" routes.
- Since February, Tehran has demanded ships seek authorization to transit the waterway, and UK Maritime Trade Operations reported at least 10 vessels were attacked in the seven days through Saturday, the highest weekly toll since the war began.
- U.S. Central Command has not confirmed the recent incidents as of Saturday night, while the United States military stated the container ship GFS Pride sank Thursday after being hit by a projectile, not a mine as Tehran claimed.
- Separately, maritime monitors reported two tankers attacked off Saudi Arabia's eastern coast in the past day, near Jubail, where incidents sit at the junction of the Iran war and Houthi escalation threatening regional oil infrastructure.
- Markets have largely discounted the recent escalation as traders await vessel identification, while President Donald Trump stated the war will end "very soon" after the November 3 midterm elections, predicting oil would "drop like a rock" when it does.
