Nara Organics Recalls Baby Formula Sold at Target After Multistate Infant Botulism Outbreak
Three infants were hospitalized after consuming the formula, and the FDA said it accounts for less than 1% of U.S. infant formula sales.
On Saturday, Nara Organics recalled its Whole Milk Organic Powdered Infant Formula sold nationwide at Target stores and online after a multistate outbreak of infant botulism, federal authorities said.
Three infants in California, Pennsylvania, and Washington fell ill with botulism between April and May, marking the second formula-linked outbreak in seven months.
Symptoms like constipation, weak muscle tone, and breathing difficulties can take weeks to appear. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends parents stop using the product immediately.
Health officials advise labeling containers "DO NOT USE" and storing them safely away from food for at least one month. Nara Organics stated, "We are heartbroken for the concern and stress this may cause your family."
The recalled formula represents less than 1% of U.S. infant formula sales, but attorney Bill Marler criticized the food safety system, demanding manufacturers test finished products for botulism before shipping.
