Nadal Opens up on Fatherhood, Playing Vegas and Possible Exhibition with Federer in AP Interview
Nadal says fatherhood and academy duties make a return to coaching unlikely as he prepares for his first U.S. match since retirement.
On Monday, retired tennis standout Rafael Nadal promoted his upcoming exhibition, The MGM Slam presented by Capital One, scheduled for Feb. 28 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Balancing 22 Grand Slam titles with fatherhood, Nadal acknowledged the challenge of putting his two sons to bed; preparing for the exhibition provides an "obligation" to resume practicing.
Nadal remains in "almost weekly contact" with former rival Roger Federer, though no exhibition is currently confirmed between them. "Lets see whats going on in the future," Nadal said regarding a potential match.
While running the Rafa Nadal Academy, which employs up to 700 workers, Nadal ruled out full-time coaching because he cannot commit to traveling and missing his children's bedtime.
Calling the extension of Master 1000s tournaments to two weeks "a mistake," Nadal renewed his call for a rolling ranking system based on two years of results to support injured players.
