Myanmar drops extradition case against AmCham ex-board member, cancels Interpol red notice
The investigation stemmed from a $300,000 lobbying contract and led to arrests, but officials said evidence was insufficient for extradition.
Myanmar authorities dropped their criminal case against Misfit Technologies CEO Munimul Islam and canceled the Interpol "red notice" for his arrest, citing insufficient evidence for extradition.
AmCham Myanmar accused Islam, Adam Castillo, and Khaung 'Danny' Kyaw of financial impropriety in an internal dispute, alleging they "illegally collected" $300,000 to hire Mercury Public Affairs for lobbying without board approval.
Detained for 14 days in Spain, Islam said he is "certainly not satisfied" with the outcome, describing the detention as causing "enormous emotional, financial and reputational harm."
President Donald Trump's administration previously secured Castillo's release by sending a delegation to Myanmar, as authorities claimed their "primary goal" was friendly bilateral relations with the United States.
Islam told The Associated Press on Monday that the case exposes "serious weaknesses in Interpol's safeguards," allowing military regimes to trigger detention over unsubstantiated allegations.
