Murder arrest after newborn baby dies in fall in central London

A 43-year-old woman was arrested after the infant fell from a Westminster residence; police say the incident likely occurred in a domestic context and are seeking witnesses.

  • On Saturday, March 14, officers attended Horseferry Road in Westminster after reports an 18-day-old baby girl fell from a residential property, and a 43-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of murder.
  • Detective Chief Inspector Alison Foxwell said: 'Our thoughts today are with the baby's family. The death of an infant is always an extremely tragic occurrence, and officers are making urgent enquiries around the circumstances.' The Metropolitan Police say the incident appears to have occurred within a domestic context and an urgent investigation has been launched.
  • The London Ambulance Service said paramedics treated the baby at the scene before transferring her to a major trauma centre, where she was later pronounced dead, while forensics officers worked in a third-floor flat, Peabody Estate.
  • A guarded police cordon was erected on Great Peter Street, just off Horseferry Road, closing the road to traffic while uniformed officers diverted passers-by around the scene.
  • Anyone with information is urged to call 101, quoting reference 1596/14MAR, as Horseferry Road runs past government buildings including the Department for Transport and Channel 4.
