3 Seriously Injured In 'Electrical Mishap' Near MoCo Metro Station
Officials said the workers suffered electrical burns and other injuries, and one patient was taken as a Priority 1 trauma case.
On Monday, June 8, 2026, three workers were seriously injured in a "possible electrical explosion" inside an electrical shaft next to the Medical Center Metro Station in Bethesda, according to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Service officials.
Spokesman Pete Piringer said crews were called at 7:45 a.m. to a confined electrical shaft, where workers suffered electrical burns and shock. One patient was transported as a Priority 1 trauma case, two as Priority 2.
Red Line service between Medical Center and Bethesda was temporarily suspended Monday morning as authorities investigated. Commuters were asked to take the Red Line to Shady Grove, with some trains offloading at Friendship Heights to minimize traffic.
Metro General Manager Randy Clarke stated, "We are hoping for a full recovery of the injured contractors. This incident will be fully investigated." Clarke's statement appeared on his X page.
The Medical Center Metro Station, located near the National Institutes of Health campus, remains open while officials have not yet released details on what caused the electrical incident. Transit officials have not confirmed if the service closure is directly related.
