About 200 People Rescued From Unregistered South African Rehab Centre, Police Say
Police said 14 people needed medical treatment after the rescue, and the arrested couple faces kidnapping and health and safety charges.
On Friday, South African Police Service officers rescued nearly 200 people from an unregistered rehabilitation center in Siyabuswa, Mpumalanga, arresting a 59-year-old man and 58-year-old woman accused of operating the facility.
Department of Social Development officials discovered the facility during compliance checks in the Nkangala District on Thursday, 15 October 2026, and requested Saps assistance after finding it lacked required authorization.
Conditions at the facility were described as "grossly inhumane," with 37 people reportedly sharing one room and some chained together; 14 people required medical treatment during the operation.
The 59-year-old man and 58-year-old woman face charges including kidnapping and violating the Prevention of and Treatment for Substance Abuse Act, with court appearance scheduled for Monday, 19 October 2026.
Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Apaphia Modise assembled a specialized investigation team, while police warn additional arrests may follow and the department coordinates family reunifications for rescued residents.
