Carla Lockhart Resigns From DUP After Drumcree Dispute
Lockhart will sit as an independent unionist after saying the DUP response to the Drumcree dispute fell short of what unionists wanted.
On Monday, Upper Bann MP Carla Lockhart resigned from the Democratic Unionist Party over its handling of the Drumcree parading dispute, and will sit as an independent unionist in the House of Commons.
Lockhart had urged the DUP to withdraw Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly to force First Minister Michelle O'Neill from office, but party leadership refused to collapse the executive.
The conflict stems from First Minister O'Neill's participation in an allegedly unlawful protest against a Portadown Orange Order Drumcree parade; Lockhart stated the DUP response fell "far short" of promised "profound consequences."
DUP leader Gavin Robinson accused Lockhart of "arrogance," arguing it cannot be the case that every time a lawmaker "breaks the law" it can "bring down the institutions."
Lockhart stated she is "not starting a new political party" but intends to help build a "grassroots movement" within Unionism to advance shared principles.
