Motorists have been fined £14 million in the last three years for mobile phone use
Greater Manchester Police issued the most penalties, while 26% of motorists were caught by AI cameras, according to Confused.com data.
- Over 70,000 UK motorists were fined for using mobile phones while driving between 2023 and 2025, costing them £14 million in penalties according to Freedom of Information data.
- Many drivers admitted to using phones for navigation and answering calls , with 48 per cent feeling comfortable doing so while stationary in traffic or at traffic lights.
- Greater Manchester Police issued the most fines with 11,987 penalties, while Police Scotland issued 7,107 and Metropolitan Police issued 7,000. Most offenders were spotted by police officers, with 26 per cent caught by AI camera technology.
- A OnePoll survey found 59 per cent of drivers admitted to using mobiles while driving, though 84 per cent claimed they had never been caught despite fines reaching £1,000.
- Motoring expert Matt Crole-Rees warned that using a phone while driving is "not only illegal, but it can be dangerous for people in the car, on the roads, and pedestrians." Even touching a phone can result in fines or points.
