More than half of Americans distrust things sold using AI
The poll found 61% distrust AI-marketed products and 42% could not identify fake products in tests, according to Talker Research.
A new study commissioned by Auros found that more than half of Americans do not trust products advertised with AI to match descriptions, while 61% believe brands likely use misleading or AI-focused marketing.
Consumers struggle to distinguish real from AI-generated content; only 20% correctly identified real products with AI-enhanced features, while 42% correctly identified fake products when tested.
Respondents identified major retailers Walmart and Amazon as most likely to use AI marketing, followed by TikTok, Instagram, and Facebook; 36% believe AI marketing signals lower product quality.
Bobby Meixner, vice president of solution marketing at Auros, notes a trust divide: consumers reject AI used "to persuade them" but remain receptive when using AI tools for better decisions.
Yet 54% of Americans plan to use AI for holiday shopping this year, intending to use the technology to find deals, suggest gift ideas, and track packages.
