More than 100 foreign trekkers stranded in flood-hit region of Nepal, official says
More than 100 foreign trekkers remain stranded in central Nepal after weekend flooding swept away trails, with army rescue operations continuing on Monday as the flood has receded.
A landslide on Sunday in Gorkha, 100 km west of Kathmandu, blocked the Budhi Gandaki River, a tributary of the Trishuli River, leading to downstream flooding.
Authorities rescued 96 people, including nine foreigners; while no fatalities were reported, the river's debris damaged homes and three hydroelectric plants.
Bhuwan Raj Ojha of the Manaslu Conservation Area Project told Reuters that hikers needing to return "need to be rescued," while those in safe locations may continue trekking.
"Understanding what triggered this flood will be critical," Pema Gyamtsho of the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development said, noting that the event demonstrates risk exposure.
Flash floods in Nepal have caused extensive damage, washing away bridges and damaging trekking trails, leaving over 100 foreign trekkers stranded in various locations. Rescue operations are underway.
