More teens are using generative AI to make explicit content. What parents should know about it

Nearly half of surveyed teens said they saw AI-generated sexual content, and about 20% said they created it or knew someone who did.

  • New Common Sense Media research shows nearly 75% of teens have seen online pornography, with more than half encountering such material by age 12. The survey of 1,314 teens highlights growing prevalence of AI-generated sexual content.
  • Dr. Supreet Mann, Common Sense Media's director of research, described a 'frictionless space' where AI removes agency. Unlike curated pornography, this material often depicts peers, stripping individuals of control over their images.
  • Nearly 20% of survey participants have created AI-generated sexual content themselves or know someone who has done so, with more than 60% noting the content depicted people they know personally. Peer-to-peer creation is increasingly common.
  • Almost 70% of teens reported feeling worried about being victims of nonconsensual AI-generated content. Nearly 40% have made social media accounts private, limited sharing, or deleted accounts entirely to protect themselves.
  • Local officials in San Francisco commanded Apple and Google to remove 'nudify' apps from their app stores last week. Experts argue schools, families, and platforms share institutional responsibility to mitigate harms rather than leaving teens alone.
