More roller coasters shut down as authorities investigate fatal fall at Georgia amusement park
State and park investigators are reviewing the fatal ejection, and officials say 10 similar coasters were shut down across North America.
Six Flags Over Georgia will reopen Friday, October 16, though the Goliath roller coaster remains closed following the death of 42-year-old Hassan Jihad Ibn Kariem. Park officials have not announced a reopening date for the ride.
On Monday, October 12, Kariem was ejected from the 200-foot-tall coaster while visiting with family, striking other patrons before falling. Four juveniles sustained non-life-threatening injuries in the incident near Atlanta.
Kariem was an IT manager and teacher at Wesley International Academy for over 12 years. Georgia's Office of the Commissioner of Insurance and Safety Fire is conducting an "in-depth and comprehensive review" to determine compliance with safety procedures.
Six Flags temporarily closed nine similar roller coasters across six parks "out of an abundance of caution," a company spokesperson said. The park team continues cooperating with local authorities as investigations proceed.
Investigators must examine the restraint locking mechanism, seat structure, and how the rider interacted with the ride's forces. There is no federal regulation for amusement park rides; Commissioner John King confirmed annual inspections occurred before the season began.
