More pregnant women are dying in Congo as they avoid hospitals over Ebola
Maternal deaths in Ituri nearly doubled as prenatal visits fell from 60 a month to about 10, UNFPA data showed.
- On Saturday, the World Health Organization reported that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is now the country's largest on record, with 3,605 confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths as of July 30.
- Initially confined to the Mongbwalu health zone, the virus has spread over two months into 49 health zones across Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uele and Tshopo provinces, while conflict and displacement hamper surveillance.
- United Nations Population Fund representative Noemi Dalmonte reports a shadow crisis as pregnant women avoid hospitals, causing maternal deaths to jump from 3.1 to 5.8 weekly; deaths outside health centers rose to 17.4%.
- Fear and rumors drive residents away from care, as "with Ebola, it is stronger because Ebola has a lot of rumors," Dalmonte said; the outbreak has claimed 44 health workers among 151 infections.
