More Police, Prosecutors: CentreBC Unveils Public Safety Plans
The plan also doubles SITE and CSTEP funding to $26 million and adds recovery units and intensive care homes for vulnerable people.
On Oct. 15, CentreBC Party leader Elenore Sturko announced a safety plan in Surrey, promising to hire 500 additional RCMP officers and 60 Crown prosecutors over five years.
As a former Surrey RCMP officer running in Surrey South, Sturko noted provincial RCMP staffing has remained stagnant at 2,602 officers under the NDP, citing public safety concerns as her motivation for entering politics.
CentreBC would double annual funding to $26 million for the Special Investigation and Targeted Enforcement and Community Safety and Targeted Enforcement programs, targeting violent and repeat offenders.
The plan includes opening two voluntary recovery units by 2028-29 and creating approximately 300 intensive care spaces by 2030-31, while requesting Ottawa fund round-the-clock support homes.
Sturko emphasized that "effective enforcement, accountability, as well as rehabilitation and longitude of care, are things that work together to provide public safety." The party intends to use restorative justice to direct people into care.
