Moon economy: The race to build a business beyond Earth

In BREVARD COUNTY, Fla., NASA is partnering with Commercial firms to build an economy beyond Earth, moving beyond simply planting an American flag.
A Deloitte report projects the lunar economy could reach $566 billion by 2050, with Infrastructure as the foundation and transportation generating $206 billion in economic value.
Jon Crocker, director of Space Commerce at The University of Maryland, noted companies leverage space technology to deliver products on Earth, citing GPS systems and rideshare apps as examples.
"SpaceX gets a lot of attention because of its launch cadence," Crocker said, though other companies are also working to breach the frontier into space and low Earth orbit.
"It seems like there is a lot of activity right now," Crocker said, adding that Nuclear power could help future moon missions 'survive the night' as growth accelerates.
