States and Cities Sue over Trump’s EPA Eliminating Rule that Limits Emissions From Power Plants
The agency says the rollback will save $310 billion and lower power costs, while public health and environmental groups have filed a federal lawsuit.
- On Thursday, a coalition of 21 states led by New York sued the Trump Administration for repealing greenhouse gas emission rules, filing the challenge in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia to strike down the repeal.
- EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin announced the repeal to end what he termed a "war on coal," claiming the move will save the industry more than $300 billion in costs while protecting reliable energy for Americans.
- While energy sector players praised the move to "unleash" American energy, New York Attorney General Letitia James condemned the repeal as a "callous disregard" for public health, arguing it will set the nation back decades.
- Arguing the EPA unlawfully abandoned pollution limits without considering health costs, the coalition petitions the U.S. Court of Appeals while the agency simultaneously proposed a companion rule to prevent future administrations from regulating climate pollution.
- The EPA is holding a virtual public hearing today to gather feedback on the proposal, with public comments remaining open until Nov. 2 following the rule's publication in the Federal Register on Sept. 14.
