Moderna Stock Plunges 25% After Possible Cancer Vaccine Data Leak
The brief posting showed lower recurrence or death risk, but the leak sent Moderna shares down 25% and left investors awaiting the full readout.
Moderna Inc shares plunged 25% on Thursday following an early leak of late-stage melanoma vaccine data developed in partnership with Merck, revealing elevated expectations built into the stock.
The personalized vaccine data appeared on a medical news website shortly after midday today and was removed soon afterward, ahead of a scheduled ESMO presentation this weekend.
Intismeran, the personalized vaccine paired with Merck's immunotherapy Keytruda, reduced melanoma recurrence or death risk by 42% versus Keytruda alone, while ASCO results showed a 49% reduction.
Moderna stock's 25% drop exposed a 527% year-to-date gain, while BioNTech fell just 2%, isolating the selloff to Moderna's dependence on the melanoma vaccine for growth.
The full ESMO presentation scheduled for this weekend will determine whether the leaked data's favorable findings justify the stock's valuation, as Moderna views the vaccine as central to its oncology franchise.
