Crews Search for Missing Southwest Iowa Man After Car Found Near Washed-Out Road
Investigators say a submerged vehicle was removed and the road may stay closed for a while after historic rainfall damaged the crossing.
Investigators believe a missing man drove over a collapsed road in Harrison County, Iowa, early Thursday morning after he failed to arrive at work.
Portsmith Volunteer Fire Chief Michael Leinen said operations began after an alert at 5 a.m. Monday, when personnel discovered the road to Persia, Iowa, about 37 miles northeast of Omaha, had washed out.
Search crews combing the area near Spring Creek discovered car parts and eventually located the submerged vehicle; Leinen noted the high water could have displaced the car 10 miles from the crash site.
Although rescuers recovered the vehicle, they still do not know the location of the driver, and the man's family is asking for privacy as search efforts continue.
Search conditions remain difficult due to saturated ground and muck, with personnel sinking knee-deep in mud, while officials wait to utilize drones to scout the area.
