Missiles and fireworks 'thrown at North Tyneside emergency crews'
Police said the violence was linked to misinformation about the building’s future, and six people were arrested after firefighters and officers were attacked.
On Thursday, November 5, 2026, Northumbria Police responded to violent disorder on the Meadow Well estate in North Tyneside during Bonfire Night, where emergency crews faced attacks from fireworks and bricks.
The violence was linked to community misinformation falsely claiming the building would become an HMO; police confirmed the site is actually intended for a supermarket with private rental flats above.
Approximately 60 youths attacked emergency services with bricks and fireworks, damaging five police cars and three fire engines, while several officers were injured during what police described as "planned violent disorder."
Northumbria Police arrested six individuals on suspicion of violent disorder, with Area Commander for North Tyneside Chief Superintendent Daniel Whyte warning those involved should expect a "knock on the door."
Condemning the violence as "appalling," North Tyneside Mayor Karen Clark and North East Mayor Kim McGuinness stated the community's pride should not be overshadowed by a violent minority.
