GOP Rep. Finstad Seeks Recount in Minnesota's 1st District Race
Finstad said the campaign will follow the state recount process as unofficial results show a margin of just over 300 votes.
Rep. Brad Finstad announced Thursday that a recount will proceed in Minnesota's 1st Congressional District, where unofficial results show challenger Democrat Jake Johnson leading by over 300 votes, a margin of less than 0.1%.
Under Minnesota law, Finstad qualifies for a publicly financed recount because the margin falls below the 0.25% threshold for federal office elections. This race is one of several recent contests across the state facing narrow margins.
Johnson, a Mayo High School math teacher, declared victory Wednesday after unofficial totals showed him ahead by 323 votes. Campaign manager Nik Marda stated, "All precincts have reported and counted their legal votes, and Jake is up by over 300 votes."
Finstad stated he will await the recount results, committing to ensure "every vote is counted in an accurate and transparent manner." The State Canvassing Board will meet to certify results after Thursday, Nov. 19.
Historically, no U.S. House recount in over 40 years has resulted in a vote total change large enough to flip a race with this margin. Past recounts have shown only slight shifts in vote counts.
