Vance Boelter's State Trial Delayed Until May
Boelter waived his speedy-trial right as defense lawyers cited 1,500 pages of reports and thousands of videos to review.
On Monday, a Hennepin County judge delayed the state trial for Vance Boelter until May 10, 2027, granting a defense request for additional time to review evidence before proceedings begin.
Assistant public defender Raissa Carpenter argued the defense team cannot adequately prepare without more time, citing approximately 1,500 pages of reports, 161 drone videos, and 103 audio interviews to review.
Boelter was previously sentenced to life in federal prison for the June 14, 2025, assassination of Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and the shootings of Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette.
Sen. John Hoffman and his family stated they have "waited long enough," expressing frustration with the delay, while Judge Juan Hoyos issued a temporary gag order restricting public comments on the case.
Boelter's defense has also requested to move the trial out of Hennepin County, while Judge Hoyos is taking a request for a more permanent gag order under advisement.
