Ministers unveil plans for faster approvals for nuclear and aviation fuel plants
The new regime gives developers one regulatory contact as officials say it could create up to 600 jobs and speed approvals.
- Ministers announced the Environment Agency will serve as the "lead environmental regulator" for the Sizewell C nuclear project in Suffolk and the Lighthouse Green Fuels sustainable aviation fuel plant in Teesside, streamlining planning approvals.
- Developers on complex schemes typically navigate multiple regulators, causing costly delays and approval bottlenecks. The Environment Agency will now provide a single point of contact to coordinate environmental checks on both projects.
- Sizewell C could supply six million homes with nuclear energy, while the Teesside facility aims to create 2,000 construction jobs and support 3,400 supply chain roles, producing fuel for 27,000 flights annually.
- The Environment Department, Defra, stated the move will not "water down" green standards because it will coordinate with other regulators on assessments. Alfanar Projects welcomed the streamlined process as accelerating infrastructure delivery.
- These measures support the Government's goal to remove fossil fuels from Britain's electricity generation by 2030, addressing energy security concerns following global conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
