Mike Layton Eyes Return to Toronto City Council
Layton says he wants to focus on affordable housing, transit and rooftop solar as he reenters a race with 10 candidates.
On Monday, August 17, 2026, former Toronto city councillor Mike Layton announced his candidacy for the University-Rosedale seat, planning to file nomination papers at Toronto City Hall this morning.
Layton stepped away from municipal politics four years ago to prioritize family, but his children are now asking bigger questions about affordable housing and the environment, prompting his return.
If re-elected, Layton plans to expand affordable housing and transit while installing rooftop solar panels, stating the election "is a chance to elect a progressive mayor and council who can effect meaningful change."
Ten candidates are competing for the Ward 11 seat, including incumbent Dianne Saxe who claimed the position following Layton's 2022 resignation; the municipal election will be held on Oct. 26.
Layton is the son of the late Jack Layton, a former Toronto councillor and New Democratic Party leader, and stepson of Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow, positioning him within a prominent political family.
