Migrants clash with police and cut through a fence at a Greek detention center
Migrants clashed with police at a detention center in northern Greece and cut through a perimeter fence, leading to 35 escaping before about half were recaptured.
Greece is a main entry point for migrants into Europe, making migration a significant and contentious issue in the country.
Police reinforcements responded to protests where migrants threw rocks at guards, and police special forces used flash grenades during clashes lasting until early Sunday.
Seventeen escaped migrants were arrested, and authorities continued searching for others following the clashes.
In the Greek Sintiki 500 migrants live in a closed shelter, many are to be deported. Now some of them fought with the police. There were arrests and injuries.
On the border with Bulgaria, there was an uprising in a detention centre for asylum seekers. After that, dozens of migrants fled the camp – some were then arrested again.
