Man killed his wife by stabbing her 78 times
Jurors rejected Robert Alexander’s self-defense claim after evidence showed 78 stab wounds and a pattern of coercive control over money.
Robert Alexander, 66, was convicted on Tuesday of murdering his wife, Christina Alexander, at Stafford Crown Court after a jury rejected his self-defense and diminished responsibility claims.
Beginning in 2019, Alexander demonstrated persistent controlling behavior toward Ms. Alexander, including a September 2020 chokehold incident; by June 2021, she told police she lived under constant threat of violence.
Forensic evidence revealed Ms. Alexander sustained 78 stab wounds to her face, neck, body, arms and legs. After the killing, Alexander made a 999 call, then calmly changed clothes and put out the bins.
Narmina Rafiq from the CPS said the trial was a "complex and challenging prosecution involving detailed psychiatric evidence" about Alexander's mental state; sentencing is pending at a later date.
Psychiatric experts concluded Alexander harmed himself twice in the weeks before the murder to manipulate Ms. Alexander, contradicting his trial claims and supporting the prosecution's case that his actions were driven by control.
