MI5 Chief Ken McCallum Confirms Russia Did Interfere in Brexit Referendum but Says It Had Little Impact – UK Politics Live
Sir Ken McCallum said Russia’s efforts were comparatively unimpressive and urged the UK not to amplify online trolls.
MI5 Chief Sir Ken McCallum warned against fueling Russian propaganda efforts after Prime Minister Andy Burnham alleged Moscow attempted to interfere in the 2016 Brexit referendum.
On Monday, Burnham told MPs that Russia intervened in the 2019 general election, asserting it is "inconceivable that this was the first time" Moscow sought to influence UK voting.
Speaking at Thames House, Sir Ken confirmed Russia sought to influence the vote, dismissing the "comparative unimpressiveness" of the efforts and warning against overstating the trolls' impact.
Sir Ken noted Russian trolls would be "delighted" if the furore caused by the Prime Minister's comments continues, risking amplification of adversaries' reach.
Public records from the DCMS Committee and Intelligence and Security Committee confirm Russian media organizations like Russia Today and Sputnik attempted interference in 2016, preceding any secret intelligence.
In his annual speech, the British Head of Internal Intelligence reported that Moscow had tried to influence the Brexit vote in 2016 via Russia Today, Sputnik and social networks.
Chief MI5, Ken McCallum, said on Tuesday that Moscow tried to blend into the 2016 Brexit referendum with anti-EU reports in the RT and Sputnik media and through the troll socialisation accounts.
